The opportunity
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Tech Lead to join our dynamic e-commerce team. This role is a fantastic opportunity for a senior developer looking to step into a leadership position, or an existing lead looking for a new challenge. You will be instrumental in driving the technical execution and delivery of innovative features for our web and mobile e-commerce platforms. This is a hands-on role where you will spend the majority of your time on engineering tasks, while also dedicating time to leading and mentoring a talented squad of engineers.
What you’ll be doing:
- Lead a squad of 4-6 backend and frontend engineers, plus a Quality Engineer, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and high performance.
- Partner closely with your peer Product Manager to understand requirements, define technical solutions, and plan sprint and release deliverables.
- Drive the technical design, development, and delivery of new e-commerce features and enhancements across our web and mobile platforms.
- Ensure the quality, scalability, performance, and security of the features your squad delivers.
- Conduct code reviews, provide technical guidance, and mentor engineers within your squad, supporting their technical and professional growth.
- Manage the people aspects of your squad, including performance management, career development, leave management, and fostering a positive team environment.
- Contribute to hands-on development, particularly in areas requiring senior expertise or for proof-of-concept work.
- Work with the Director of Engineering (your reporting manager) on technical strategy, roadmap alignment, and engineering best practices.
- Champion agile methodologies and continuous improvement within your squad.
The ideal toolbox:
- You possess a strong engineering mindset with a passion for solving complex problems and building high-quality, scalable solutions.
- Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer or Technical Lead in an e-commerce or high-traffic web/mobile application environment.
- You are a "full stack" developer or have significant experience across both frontend and backend technologies.
- You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy working closely with product managers and other stakeholders.
- You are a natural leader and mentor, capable of bringing out the best in your team and fostering their growth and development.
- You are delivery-focused and have a strong sense of ownership.
- You have excellent communication skills and can articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- You are comfortable with a 60% engineering and 40% leadership/delivery time split.
- Demonstrable experience in delivering complex software projects from ideation to production.
- Strong proficiency and hands-on experience with React and React-Native.
- Solid experience with backend technologies and API development
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud) is highly desirable.
- Experience with Agile development methodologies.
Role location
We believe that building connections and collaborating as Pet Circlers is super important. So this role is based in Sydney with a hybrid arrangement of 3 days per week in our pet friendly offices (your pet might love coming to the office even more than you). This is subject to change in line with business requirements.
