The opportunity

We're looking for a highly skilled and passionate Senior Backend Engineer to join our Customer Tribe, which builds and maintains the core applications that serve millions of customers every day on one of Australia's largest e-commerce platforms.

This is a hands-on, highly technical role where you'll work in a fast-paced environment alongside a talented squad of engineers, a product manager, a QA engineer, and a designer. You'll be a key contributor to our customer-facing systems, from the website and app to our critical communication channels.

What you’ll be doing:

• Take ownership of the full software development lifecycle, from designing and building robust solutions to deploying and monitoring them in production.
• Tackle complex technical challenges with a high degree of autonomy, bringing innovative and "outside-the-box" solutions to the team
• Collaborate closely with your squad to define technical requirements and architect scalable, high-performance systems.
• Write clean, well-tested code in our primary stack, while also maintaining and modernizing our legacy Java applications.
• Instill a culture of strong ownership and accountability for the software you build.
• Be a champion for the customer experience, ensuring that every technical decision you make has a positive impact on the end user.
• Understand the critical role of monitoring and observability and ensure our applications are well-instrumented.

The ideal toolbox:

• Significant hands-on experience in backend software engineering, with a strong focus on building scalable and resilient applications.
• Deep proficiency in JavaScript, TypeScript, and Java.
• Extensive experience with cloud platforms, ideally with Google Cloud (GCP) or AWS.
• Proven knowledge of software architecture and best practices for building cloud-native applications.
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and an understanding of how to automate and improve deployment processes.
• A solid understanding of monitoring, observability, and the tools used to ensure application health and performance.

• A strong passion for engineering and a curiosity that drives you to continuously learn and improve your craft.
• A customer-first mindset where you care deeply about the user experience, not just the technical solution.
• A self-starter who thrives on autonomy, is confident in their ability to solve complex problems, and takes pride in their work.
• Embraces new technology, particularly AI, and has a strong curiosity for how it can be applied to solve real-world problems.
• Someone who actively looks for new solutions and challenges the status quo.

Role location

We believe that building connections and collaborating as Pet Circlers is super important. So this role is based in Sydney with a hybrid arrangement of 3 days per week in our pet friendly offices (your pet might love coming to the office even more than you). This is subject to change in line with business requirements.
